Artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning are the three terms that are usually used interchangeably but do not quite refer to the same things. While we come across these terms nowadays, very few actually know the difference between them. But our world is technologically growing at a rapid rate. And we are coming across quotes like, ‘future belongs to artificial intelligence, this makes it very essential to know what do these terms really mean.
We are here to help you through this. Let’s dig deeper for you to understand which is better for your specific use case: artificial intelligence, machine learning, or deep learning.
What is artificial intelligence?
As the name suggests, artificial intelligence is the stimulation of human intelligence as demonstrated by machines. It is the envelope concept that consists of everything from Good Old-Fashioned AI to futuristic technologies such as deep learning.
An “intelligent” behavior shown by machines when it completes tasks based on a set of stipulated rules that solve problems containing algorithms, is what we loosely call artificial intelligence. For instance, such types of machines can move and manipulate objects and recognize whether someone has raised their hands, or solve other problems.
For writing and training machine learning algorithms, AI requires a foundation of specialized hardware and software. Not a single programming language is synonymous with AI, but a few, including Python, R, and Java, are quite popular. The working of AI systems includes ingesting large amounts of labeled training data, analyzing the data for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to make predictions about future states. AI programming mainly focuses on three cognitive skills: learning, reasoning, and self-correction.
AI-powered machines are generally classified into two types: general and narrow. General artificial intelligence machines are capable of intelligently solving problems, like the ones mentioned above. The narrow artificial intelligence machines are capable of performing specific tasks very well, sometimes even better than humans; though they are limited in scope. This technology is used for classifying images on sites like Pinterest.
What is machine learning?
As per the name, machine learning is the study of computer algorithms and data analysis that automatically improves through experience and by the use of data. It is considered a part of artificial intelligence. Loosely interpreting its meaning, one can say that it is the process of mean empowering computer systems with the ability to “learn”.
This enables machines to learn by them using the provided data and make accurate predictions. This method of training algorithms allows them to learn how to make decisions.
A machine learning algorithm is being developed to try to identify whether the fruit given is mango or an apple. After feeding the algorithm with the training data, it learns the differing characteristics between a mango and an apple. Therefore, when provided with data of weight and texture, it can predict accurately the type of fruit and its characteristics.
Most industries working with large amounts of data are getting hugely benefited from machine learning technology. Two of the most widely adopted methods of machine learning are supervised learning and unsupervised learning.
What is deep learning?
Deep learning comes under the preview of ML; in fact, it’s just a technique for realizing machine learning. It imitates the workings of the human brain, processes the data, and creates patterns to be used in decision making. It is just the next evolution of machine learning.
The algorithms for deep learning are roughly inspired by the information processing patterns that are found in the human brain. Just like humans use their brains to identify patterns and classify various types of information, deep learning algorithms can be taught to accomplish the same tasks for machines as well.
Whenever we receive new information, the brain tries to compare it with a known item before making sense of it; this is the same concept that is used for deep learning algorithms.
For instance, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are a type of algorithms that aim to imitate the way our brains work and make decisions.
Deep Learning is used across industries like self-driving cars, news aggregation, and fraud news detection, virtual assistants, visual recognition, healthcare, etc.
So, in short, AI is the all-encompassing concept that initially erupted, and was then followed by ML that later thrived, and lastly, DL which is quite promising to escalate the advances of AI to the next level.
